Why You Should Be Training With a .22LR AR15

The past three years of the global logistical infrastructure’s failure has affected every commercial and industrial sector imaginable. Ammo prices rose to sky high value amidst uncertain times riddled with civil unrest, pandemics, threats of armed conflict between nuclear powers. Such times of turmoil tend to give people the clarity needed to prioritize the skills to fight for the preservation of your person, your loved ones, and your community.

If everyone else suddenly has the bright idea to do the same and a 50 round box of 5.56 NATO becomes more valuable than a 5 years supply of iodine pills, how will you train to become confident of your marksmanship skills?

For most individuals residing in North America, the go-to rifle to rely on for emergencies tends to be the AR15. The overwhelming aftermarket support for AR rifles is uncontested as is evident; but in the vast furniture and conversion kits designed for the AR15... One conversion kit to answer the previous question is a 22 LR AR conversion kit.

Is a 22 AR good?

A 22 LR AR is a soft shooting rifle that’s good for acclimating new shooters to weapon handling for a very affordable entry range. At $0.09 per 22LR round, you’ll be shooting five times less than the value of 5.56 NATO with every shot. For those struggling to afford ammo, this is a great stop gap to continue training during pandemic-level prices.

Quiet and easy going, 22LR is known to have barely any noticeable recoil and this makes it a perfect entry caliber for beginners. Without having to account for recoil, shooters can spot their shots landing without losing their sight picture. Less recoil to fight means less fatigue, keeping you training for a lot longer.

CMMG Bravo Kit

22 long rifle guns are great starter firearms, but what if you can convert a primary go-to gun to a 22 LR rifle? Unlike 300 Blackout, 22LR doesn’t need a dedicated 22 LR AR upper or 22 LR AR barrel to swap in between calibers.

The CMMG Bravo .22LR AR conversion kit is a great accessory that is as convenient to install and remove from your AR as a standard bolt carrier group. If you ever want to bump back up to 5.56 NATO, having options to both 22LR and 5.56 NATO at the same time is as simple as having the same rifle and having room for a spare bolt carrier group. No need for proprietary charging handles or buffer assemblies. Sitting at $245.99 for the conversion kit and 3 magazines , the CMMG Bravo Kit will quickly prove its value as an investment in just one range trip.

Should left-handed users want to try the conversion kit goodness for themselves, the CMMG Bravo is available for left ejecting AR receivers.

Can I use my regular trigger assembly with the CMMG Bravo Kit?

The value of having the same rifle setup, with the exception of the bolt carrier group, allows the user to train with the same trigger break and the same furniture as they would when shooting 5.56 NATO. Knowing your trigger break is an important part of familiarizing your firearm to shoot quickly.

What is a brick of 22LR ammo?

A troop of monkeys. A murder of crows. A squad of squids. A brick of 22LR is used to refer to a plural quantity of 22LR in a box, more specifically 500 rounds.

Can you shoot a 22 WMR in a 22LR?

.22 Winchester is an effective round for varmint control with minimal recoil, but it is not to be used in a firearm chambered in 22LR. 22 WMR may appear close in resemblance to 22LR’s diameter but the 22 WMR cartridge is noticeably longer than that of 22LR. You cannot shoot 22 WMR through a 22LR firearm as you would not be able to chamber a .22 Winchester round in the first place.

Vice versa, if you chambered a 22LR round into a 22 WMR caliber firearm, the round will fit loosely inside of the breech. If you make the mistake of shooting that round, the case walls would rupture inside of the firearm and cause something similar to an out of battery detonation.

It makes a mess of your firearm, potentially destroying it. Don’t try it.

How far will 22LR penetrate?

In a ballistic gel block mixed to mimic porcine tissue, 22LR can be expected to have a penetration depth of between 10” to 12”.

How loud is a 22LR round when fired?

Unsuppressed 22LR going off can sound off to 145 dB. A single shot out of a Ruger American Bolt Action at a varmint in your garage won’t have your ears ringing and will be comparable to a balloon popping if you took the shot in somewhere with more open space. However, past 140 dB, you’re within the range of hearing damage with regular exposure.

Can a 22LR be lethal?

Although a punctured lung can kill a coyote, it doesn’t mean an immediately incapacitating wound. It can take days before the coyote dies and does so somewhere far away from your ability to track it. 22LR can be lethal, but only if it manages to strike a major blood vessel or a thin part of the skull. For this reason, a 22LR is typically not a good choice for a hunting round or a defensive round against anything bigger than a raccoon.

If 9mm is too much for an everyday carry gun, consider carrying .380 auto. 380 is a caliber designed to be potent while presenting itself in a small fashion for concealability.
